Dr. Alika LaFontaine appointed President of the Canadian Medical Association

Toronto , Aug 21, 2022 – CCLF is thrilled and delighted that Dr. Alika LaFontaine will lead the CMA in 2022-2023 as its first ever Indigenous president.

We offer our heartfelt congratulations to Alika. As a CCLF board member and literacy champion, he exemplifies many of our organization's core values: Alika amplifies unheard voices, helps people overcome barriers, and works toward a better future for all. We are truly honoured to count him among the healthcare professionals we get to work with, and to have him on our Board.

For more details about the appointment, read the CMA’s full release here.

Alika was also the spotlight of a recent episode of CBC's White Coat Black Art series, exploring his journey to becoming president of the CMA. In this excellent interview, he walks listeners through his life, including being labelled as learning disabled at a young age, how his parents believed education was a pathway to a better life, and more.
